Malcom's Marvelous Programs

SLAM (Student Leaders at Malcom): Each quarter the fifth grade classes rotate representing the school and organizing fun school events for students. These leaders inspire school spirit, develop leadership skills, learn about teamwork, and also participate in community service projects. K – 5 students enjoy SLAM sponsored events such as Crazy Hair Day and Mismatch Day.

 

BOOK OF PERSONAL BESTS: Students who are recognized for academic achievement and/or citizenship will receive a certificate and are invited to sign the Book of Winners in the front office. They will be recognized during the Thursday Flag Ceremony.

 

CELEBRATION BOOKS: Families are encouraged to recognize student milestones, such as birthdays, by donating a book to the Malcom library. Available Celebration Books are located on the back counter in the office. Students will be called up to the stage during the Thursday Flag Salute to be honored.

 

GREEN MALCOM MARINERS: Students are recognized throughout the year for displaying the character traits in the Character Counts Program. When 15 Mariners are turned into the office manager by the student, the Dr. Baerst will recognize the outstanding citizen in the classroom.

 

CHARACTER COUNTS PROGRAM: For the past few years Malcom has participated school-wide in the Nationally Recognize Character Counts program. In addition, a few students are chosen by the teachers to receive Character Counts certificates at the last Flag Salute each month. Below are the “Six Pillars of Character” that are shared with students throughout the school year.

Trustworthiness: Be honest, be reliable (do what you say you’ll do), have the courage to do the right thing and be loyal (stand by your family and friends)

Respect: Treat others with respect, follow the Golden Rule (treat others how you want to be treated), use good manners, be considerate of the feelings of others, keep your hands to yourself.

Responsibility: Do what you are supposed to do (do the right thing), persevere (keep on trying), always do your best, use self-control, be self-disciplined, and think before you act (consider the consequences and take responsibility for your actions).

Fairness: Follow the rules (in the classroom and on the playground), take turns and share, listen to others, do not take advantage of others, and do not blame others carelessly.

Caring: Be kind and compassionate (show you care), express gratitude, forgive others, and help people in need

Citizenship: Do your share to make your school and community better, cooperate with others, stay informed, be a good neighbor. obey laws in the community and rules while at school, respect authority, and protect the environment

 

SCHOOL SITE COUNCIL: Consisting of elected staff members and parents, School Site Council meets approximately five times per school year to review a variety of school-related items. Meetings usually include approving categorical fund (SIP, grants, etc.) expenditures that benefit Malcom School.

 

BLOCK MUSIC: CUSD is recognized throughout California for its music program, which fosters creativity, effective communication, self-discipline and commitment. Funded by the district, all 4th and 5th grade students have an opportunity to participate in CUSD’s award-winning music program two days each week during the school day.

 

MALCOM PTA: The PTA, led this year (2017-18) by President Nicole Rusin, is a vital part of our success here at Malcom. Meetings are held every month in the MPR at Malcom. Parents are encouraged to join and participate. The PTA supports and funds a variety of programs, such as Art Masters, Reflections, and field trips. There are a variety of family-centered PTA events that take place during the school year, such as the Hawaiian Luau themed Ice Cream Social in the fall. The Malcom End of the Year Party is a great way to conclude the school year in June. Families can bid on silent auction items, eat delicious food, and play a variety of games. Sponsored by the PTA, volunteers are needed to help organize and run this event each year.

ART IN ACTION: John S. Malcom Elementary PTA is putting the “STEAM” in STEM with a rich, well-rounded, visual arts curriculum that inspires, stimulates, and develops the critical-thinking and creative skills championed by Common Core State Standards.

 
John S. Malcom PTA’s Art in Action program is an art docent program completely run by parent volunteers. The program is a parent-directed, parent-taught, parent-assisted, and parent-administered program, which relies solely on the PTA as its funding source. The program employs a comprehensive visual-art curriculum, which explores the art of great artists and cultures from around the world, introduces and reinforces the elements of art, i.e.: line, color, shape and form, space, texture and value, and provides the student a solid foundation in drawing, painting, and sculpture techniques while stimulating and developing the critical-thinking and creative skills championed by our new Common Core State Standards.
 
The program consists of six grade-level appropriate art lessons and affiliated projects for each and every K-5 student at John S. Malcom Elementary (approximately 750 students), which takes place in Malcom’s Art Studio, a classroom fully dedicated for our program. Each grade-level program is uniquely designed to be sequential, allowing the skills learned to develop and build.  Every lesson includes an open-ended discussion, not a lecture, designed to provide students the forum to observe an inspirational work of art and analyze and interpret it for the artist’s meaning and choice in execution, while supporting their own ideas using the “language of art” and listening to the ideas and comments of others.  During the discussion the parent-docent will further discuss the techniques and elements of art employed by the artist to create the great work of art.  The students, with their newly garnered knowledge, create their own unique masterpieces, using quality materials, applying what they have learned, and expressing their individual creativity visually.  There are no “directed-draw” projects in the program and as a result each student’s project is uniquely different from the next.  Each and every student, through this program, will create six amazing masterpieces and will select their favorite work created during the year to showcase at the John S. Malcom Elementary Art Show. 
 
The overall goal of the program is to provide each student with a rich, well-rounded knowledge of the cultural arts and skills required to create their own amazing works of art, and to stimulate, build and reinforce the critical thinking, problem-solving, and creative skills required to succeed beyond their formative education.
